It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since I posted my dad’s 90th birthday card. But here we are one year later. This was a fun card for me to make. I’ve seen lots of cards using the Large Letter framelits cutouts along with the new Sale-a-bration “Celebrate You” thinlits dies (free with $100 order during Sale-a-bration!) for the front of cards and wanted to make at least one. I’ve had this sketch idea on my craft table for over a month now and finally got to make it.
One of the things I love about Stampin’ Up!’s designer series papers is that one side is usually has a theme, e.g. this one was Christmas, but the other side is always generic enough to use for everyday! Yes, Season of Cheer DSP is retired, but I love this set! Take a look at the Be Merry DSP, it has some great patterns that you could substitute to make this card.
I love strips, so the Pear Pizzaz striped side was perfect for my dad’s card. I started with the Whisper White thick cardstock and layered on the stripped DSP. I tried several color combinations, and decided I liked the Dapper Denim color best with the Pear Pizzazz strip with Real Red highlights. Very patriotic colors which is so apropos for my retired military father! Here’s the outside:
I used the Lucky Stars embossing folder to add the festive background touch to the Dapper Denim overlay. But you could use either the Oh My Stars or Sparkle textured impressions embossing folder to get a very similar festive look.
For the inside, I cut out his birthday numbers with the Large Numbers framelits dies. I cut the Happy Birthday with that die, but cut off the “Happy” since I only need the birthday part. I rolled up glue dots and put them on the back of some of the letters to attach it and make it pop up a little. Dimensionals would have been too much height and work to cut tiny pieces that would fit on the back. I think this made a dramatic inside statement, all without any stamps! Here’s my first “draft” of the inside of his card:
I like it, but felt it needed a little more to celebrate such an important milestone birthday! So I added the Real Red enamel shapes, stars and heart, to make it really pop. What do you think? I like this version much better!
I can’t wait for my dad to receive his card! I mailed it last week since I won’t be up to celebrate his birthday until a couple of days afterwards. I didn’t want him to think I forgot his birthday! I added a piece from the Birthday Memories DSP to the envelope. (This is another of the themed DSP that I didn’t like the themed side, but I love some of the great patterns on the other side for generic birthday cards!)
Here’s what I used to make this card:

I bet your dad is going to love his card! I like the 2nd version with the enamel shapes, it definitely feels more festive. Congratulations on your official retirement! So glad you’re have more time to create and relax now. Can’t wait to see what you make next.
